Larger photo shoots move from the table-top to a back-drop.  These usually require even more photo direction, because there are so many more aspects to take into consideration.  For example, the motorcycle was on loan from a bike shop.  It was clean but dusty, so we hand washed and armor-alled the plastic and rubber...except for the treads of the tires.  Since the concept was that the bike was to be in motion, we wanted the treads to look realistic.  At the same time, when the rider boarded the bike, he picked up dirt from the ground on the bottom of his boots.  We felt this distracting so we took a wet towel and wiped off the bottoms.  This may seem like minutia, but this kind of attention to detail is all part of photo direction and what makes for a successful photo shoot.
